PELHAM — A California man has been indicted for his role in attempting to perpetrate a tech support scam targeting an elderly New Hampshire resident.

Yalei Li, 38, of Rosemead, California, was indicted by the Hillsborough County-Southern District Grand Jury on one class A felony count of attempted theft by deception.

The indictment alleges that on April 8, Li traveled to a 92-year-old Pelham resident’s home to retrieve $50,000 in cash as part of the scam.

Li was arrested on April 8 when he arrived at the victim’s home to collect the money.

In the days leading up to his arrest, the victim received a series of deceptive phone calls.

The first caller falsely claimed to be a representative from Apple Inc.’s tech support and told the victim that her computer had been hacked and her bank account compromised.

The victim was subsequently contacted by another individual posing as a representative from her bank, who instructed her to withdraw and deliver $50,000 in cash to resolve the supposed security breach.

The caller informed the victim that a bank agent named “Kevin” would come to her home to collect the money.

Li is scheduled to appear in the Hillsborough County-Southern District Superior Court on July 7 at 1 p.m.

Li faces a maximum penalty of 7½ to 15 years in the New Hampshire State Prison and a $4,000 fine if convicted.

The Pelham Police Department investigated the case, with assistance from investigators from the Attorney General’s Office.
