WEST SPRINGFIELD — A 25-year-old West Springfield man was arrested on drunk driving charges after crashing into a police cruiser early Saturday morning.
Leeony Tessier was charged with improper turn, operating a motor vehicle with an open container of alcohol, and operating under the influence of liquor following the 2:08 a.m. accident at Riverdale Street and Ashley Avenue.
Police said Tessier was traveling south on Riverdale Street when he suddenly turned left into the path of a northbound police cruiser, despite posted no-turn and no-U-turn signs.
The officer involved in the crash was able to exit his cruiser and check on Tessier and two passengers in the other vehicle.
When the officer opened Tessier’s driver-side door to check on him, Tessier exited the car despite being told to remain inside.
The officer observed that Tessier was unsteady on his feet and using the car to steady himself.
Police also noticed a bottle of Corona beer in Tessier’s cup holder.
During questioning, officers observed signs of impairment and Tessier admitted to drinking several Coors Light beers.
Tessier failed a standardized field sobriety test and was arrested and transported to police headquarters for booking.
Officers found numerous open containers of alcohol inside Tessier’s vehicle before it was towed.
The two passengers in Tessier’s car were uninjured and left the scene.
The police officer was transported to a hospital with minor injuries and was later released.
