Woman arrested for shoplifting air conditioners in East Haven

EAST HAVEN — A Bridgeport woman was arrested June 26 after allegedly stealing two portable air conditioners from Home Depot while wearing a store apron to pose as an employee.

Mercedes Zebrowski, 35, was taken into custody at approximately 12:40 p.m. after loss prevention staff observed her pushing a cart loaded with merchandise out of the store at 75 W. Frontage Road without attempting to pay, according to East Haven police.

Staff approached Zebrowski in the parking lot and recovered the stolen merchandise, two portable air conditioners valued at nearly $800.

Officers Robert Celentano and Anthony Fiorillo located Zebrowski and a male driver, Julio Velazquez, 40, of Bridgeport, nearby in a vehicle.

Zebrowski was still in possession of the Home Depot apron when taken into custody without incident.

Police discovered Zebrowski had multiple active arrest warrants from various jurisdictions totaling $130,000 in bonds.

Velazquez was issued a misdemeanor summons for interfering with an officer and conspiracy to commit larceny in the fifth degree.

He is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on July 9.

Zebrowski was charged with larceny in the fifth degree and is being held on $130,500 total bond.

She is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court on June 27.
