Springfield police arrest carjacking suspect with loaded firearm

SPRINGFIELD — At approximately 10:35 p.m. Thursday, members of the Springfield Police Neighborhood Stabilization Bureau, Firearms Investigation Unit and Squad “C” officers seized a large capacity firearm and arrested a suspect in connection with an armed carjacking.

Around 9:45 p.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Main Street for a report of an armed carjacking.

A victim allegedly was approached by two suspects, one with a firearm.

The suspects are alleged to have pulled the victim out of his vehicle and then stole the car.

Members of the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center provided officers with a photo of the stolen vehicle.

Around 10:15 p.m., officers observed the vehicle on Carew Street near Dwight Street.

Assisting officers arrived and two suspects jumped out of the vehicle on the 100 block of Webster Street.

The car was not put into park, and it rolled into another vehicle that was parked and unoccupied on Webster Street.

Officers were able to place the passenger, later identified as Angel Suastegui, under arrest on Vinton Street.

Officers then located a firearm along the route that Suastegui was running.

The firearm was loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition and capable of holding 15 rounds.

Officers also recovered additional ammunition in Suastegui’s pocket.

Suastegui has two prior convictions for firearms related offenses.

The other suspect was able to evade police Thursday night.

The Springfield Police Detective Bureau is investigating.

22-year-old Angel Suastegui of Springfield is charged with firearm-armed carjacking, carrying a loaded large capacity firearm on a public way, possession of a large capacity firearm during the commission of a felony, firearm violation with 2 prior violent/drug crimes, improper storage of a large capacity firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, tampering or destruction of evidence, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity firearm in a vehicle, trespassing and assault and battery.
