LOCKPORT — The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers impersonating law enforcement officials and claiming victims have active arrest warrants.
The sheriff’s office said it received multiple reports of the scam, in which callers demand money to “clear up” fake arrest warrants.
In at least one case, scammers spoofed real police phone numbers and sent fake documents with official-looking seals, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said police or courts will never call, text or email to demand payment.
Law enforcement agencies also will never ask for gift cards, wire transfers or personal banking information, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office advised residents who receive suspicious calls to hang up and contact their local police department directly.
