ALFRED — Last Saturday, the York County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a contractor in Alfred that his construction trailer had been broken into and thousands of dollars’ worth of tools had been stolen.
On Monday, Deputy Cody Frazier stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation and discovered the operator, Evan Chapman, 27, of Sanford, was in possession of fentanyl.
Chapman was arrested for unlawful possession of a scheduled drug.
During a subsequent search, Deputy Frazier located tools in Chapman’s vehicle that had been reported stolen from the construction trailer.
Further investigation led deputies to a storage unit in Sanford, where the majority of the stolen tools were located and seized.
On Wednesday, investigators interviewed Zachary Jabar, 34, of Rye, N.H., who admitted to being Chapman’s accomplice in the theft.
Information obtained during the investigation also implicated Jabar in the theft of a generator, valued at $500, from a Tractor Supply store in Sanford.
Deputies executed a search warrant on a residence on Kennebunk Road in Alfred, where the stolen generator was recovered.
Chapman and Jabar have been charged with Class C theft.
Both men are scheduled to make their initial court appearance on Oct. 14 at the York Judicial Center.
The stolen tools and generator have been returned to their owners.
