Utica police arrest Ilion man on weapon charges after shooting investigation

UTICA — The Utica Police Department reported May 17 that a male suffered a gunshot wound to his leg, prompting a shooting investigation.

The case was assigned to the department’s Major Crimes Unit, which determined that the wound was self-inflicted and occurred while the injured party was seated in a vehicle.

On June 24, Major Crimes investigators arrested Dwayne Russell, 39, of Ilion.

Russell was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and criminal possession of a firearm.

Police did not release additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or Russell’s current custody status.
