PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth police arrested a 64-year-old man for driving under the influence following a motor vehicle accident on June 23.
Stephen M. Reise of Donna Drive was taken into custody after officers responded to reports of a vehicle driving on a flat tire on West Main Road near Redwood Drive at approximately 3:29 p.m.
At 3:33 p.m., officers were alerted to a motor vehicle crash on Donna Drive and located the same vehicle from the previous call.
Officers identified Reise as the operator and observed multiple signs of alcohol impairment including red and glassy eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol.
Reise admitted to consuming alcohol earlier and failed field sobriety testing before being placed under arrest.
After transport to headquarters, Reise submitted to a chemical breath test and provided breathalyzer readings of .269% and .264% blood alcohol content, more than three times the legal limit.
Reise was charged with DUI of liquor .15 or greater and additional traffic violations including refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test, possession of an alcoholic beverage while operating a vehicle, and operation with metal tires prohibited.
He was arraigned by a justice of the peace and released on $10,000 surety bail with conditions prohibiting vehicle operation until further court order.
Court records indicate Reise previously pled nolo contendere in 2000 to charges of DUI resulting in death stemming from a crash on Oct. 29, 1999.
The arrest was one of six DUI-related arrests made by Portsmouth police since June 19.
