STERLING — A 54-year-old Sterling man was arrested June 14 on felony charges after deputies found him lying in a roadway next to a motorized scooter, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
Charles V. Newkirk was charged with DWI with a previous conviction within 10 years, a Class E felony, and aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree, also a Class E felony.
Deputies responded around 6:40 p.m. to a report of an intoxicated man who had been driving a motorized scooter and was found lying in the roadway.
Investigation determined that Newkirk was operating a homemade scooter with a gasoline-powered motor on the roadway while intoxicated, Sheriff Brian Schenck said in a news release.
Newkirk was arrested at 7:13 p.m. and taken to the Public Safety Building for processing before being transported to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment.
He is scheduled to appear in Sterling Town Court at a later date.
