Albany police rule death apparent suicide after social media speculation

ALBANY — Albany police have ruled the death of a 58-year-old man found June 11 an apparent suicide after social media posts suggested criminal activity was involved.

Officers responded to the area of Green Street and Westerlo Street around 8 a.m. for reports of an individual found deceased.

The man was confirmed dead at the scene.

Following a thorough investigation and findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office, the death has been ruled a suicide.

Police said there is no evidence to indicate that any criminal activity was involved.

The Albany Police Department said it is aware of concerns posted on social media suggesting criminal activity was involved with the incident.

“We have thoroughly investigated this incident and can confirm that the theories circulating online are not accurate,” police said in a statement.

The identity of the deceased will not be released.

No further information will be released out of respect for the family’s privacy, police said.

The department extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
