Worcester police arrest man in fatal Southgate Street shooting

WORCESTER — Police arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting on Southgate Street on June 21.

Officers responded to multiple calls for shots fired at approximately 7:40 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim lying on the sidewalk and immediately began rendering aid.

The victim was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police arrested Antonio Canales-Martinez a short time later.

Canales-Martinez is charged with armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, aggravated assault and battery with serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

The Crime Scene Unit processed a firearm at the scene.

The Detective Bureau is investigating the incident.
