WOODBURY — New York State Police arrested a 54-year-old Newburgh man for driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop on Interstate 87 on June 14.

Carlos A. Mejia was charged after a trooper on routine patrol observed a 2019 gray Nissan Rogue parked on the right shoulder of the roadway near Central Valley.

The operator, later identified as Mejia, was standing outside the vehicle when the trooper approached.

During the initial interview, Mejia stated he had pulled over while returning from a family gathering in Yonkers.

An adult passenger and a 7-year-old female were also in the vehicle.

While speaking with Mejia, the trooper detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and observed signs of impairment, including bloodshot, watery eyes.

Open containers of beer were observed inside the vehicle.

Mejia admitted to drinking “a couple of beers” after exhibiting several indicators of intoxication during field sobriety testing.

Mejia was taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI with a child in the vehicle, consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, seatbelt violation for a child passenger, and stopping/standing on pavement.

Mejia was issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Woodbury Court on Wednesday, July 23, at 4:30 p.m.
