VERONA — A Port Crane man was arrested following a traffic stop conducted in the Town of Verona on June 19.
Around 2 a.m., a deputy assigned to the Oneida County Road Patrol Division conducted a traffic stop when noticing a motorcycle was operating on State Route 13 with no taillamp, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol.
The deputy detained the male operator and conducted a pat frisk of David Babenzien, 43, prior to placing him in the marked patrol car.
During the pat frisk, the deputy located a knife in Babenzien’s shorts pocket.
After inspecting the knife, the deputy learned it was a switchblade, which is illegal to possess in New York state.
Babenzien was taken into custody and transported to the Oneida County Kurt B. Wyman Law Enforcement Building where he was booked and processed.
Due to having previously been convicted of a crime, Babenzien was charged with one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a class D felony.
He also received several traffic tickets including no/insufficient tail lamps, unregistered motorcycle, aggravated unlicensed operation second degree, aggravated unlicensed operator third degree, unlicensed operator, operating without insurance and failure to comply with lawful orders.
After being processed, Babenzien was transported to the Oneida County Correctional Facility to await arraignment.
