MEDWAY — A 39-year-old man was arrested after threatening officers with a machete during a standoff that lasted more than three hours on Oakland Street.
Officers responded to 66 Oakland Street at 9:36 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a shirtless man yelling at cars.
Upon arrival, an officer observed a car backing away from a man in the street who began smashing something before running into the house at 66 Oakland Street.
Officers recognized the man as a resident of that address from previous encounters.
The man emerged from the house armed with what appeared to be a machete and threatened officers with the weapon.
As he aggressively approached an officer while waving the machete and issuing threats, the officer shot him with a 40mm less-lethal projectile.
The projectile knocked him partially to the ground but did not disable him or cause him to drop the weapon.
The man ran back into the house, prompting officers to establish a perimeter around the residence.
Medway Fire/EMS personnel staged at the scene while officers from Millis and Franklin police departments responded to assist with the perimeter.
Officers notified surrounding area residents and sealed off vehicle and foot traffic from the area.
MetroLEC was activated and responded, establishing a firmer perimeter with arrest teams and SWAT personnel staged.
MetroLEC negotiators attempted to talk the suspect out of the home.
The suspect came outside around 1 p.m., where he resisted arrest and was taken into custody by a SWAT team.
Adam Zwetchkenbaum of 66 Oakland Street was transported to the hospital under arrest for assault with a dangerous weapon and other charges.
Zwetchkenbaum is scheduled to be arraigned in Wrentham Court on Monday, June 23.
