Worcester man indicted in 2008 stabbing death of college student

WORCESTER — A Worcester County Grand Jury returned a murder indictment against one man this week in the 2008 stabbing death of a teenager in the area of North Ashland Street in Worcester, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.

Marquis Brown, 40, of Worcester, was indicted on one count of murder in the death of 19-year-old Becker College student William Smith.

One other person was also indicted on one count of perjury as a result of the investigation.

Steven Black, 39, of Worcester, was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on June 6 and released on $5,000 cash bail with a GPS monitoring device and conditions of release.

On Sept. 21, 2008, Worcester Police officers responded to the area of 101 Highland St. for reports of a large fight.

Responding officers found a large crowd of people and several active fights in progress.

As an officer approached the intersection of North Ashland Street and Dix Street, he observed an individual carrying Smith, who was suffering from a stab wound to the chest.

Smith was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Following the indictment on Tuesday, Brown was arrested without incident in Worcester.

He was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court yesterday on one count of murder and held without bail.

His case returns to court on July 21.

This case was investigated by the Worcester Police Department.

The charges resulted from the Worcester Police Department and Worcester County District Attorney’s Office’s efforts to review and close all open homicide cases.
