LEWISTON — A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the May shooting death of his 4-year-old stepson.
Robert McCoy was taken into custody at approximately 10:25 a.m. June 18 and charged with manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child, according to Maine State Police.
The charges stem from an incident on May 17 when Lewiston police received a 911 call at approximately 4:55 a.m. reporting a child with a gunshot wound at 93 Pierce Street.
The victim, identified as Jasper Smith, was transported to Central Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m.
The Lewiston Police Department, Lewiston Fire Department and United Ambulance Service responded to the initial call.
Jasper was later transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South assisted with the investigation at the request of Lewiston police.
The Department of Health and Human Services was notified as required by protocol when a child dies in a household.
The child’s mother, 27-year-old Mikayla Smith, was also arrested on unrelated warrants.
Both McCoy and Smith were transported to the Androscoggin County Jail.
The investigation remains ongoing.
