HOLYOKE — Holyoke Police Officers and Detectives responded to the Sullivan School at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for a report of two subjects carrying a firearm on school grounds.
The juvenile subjects were quickly located with two Orbeez style gel guns.
Detectives received information that two males left the school property and located them in a parking lot near Leary Drive.
The individuals were detained and determined to be 12 and 13-year-old juveniles.
Detectives recovered two silver gel toy blasters.
Officers spoke to the young men about the seriousness of the offense.
They were placed under arrest.
Police Chief Brian Keenan said the safety of students, teachers and staff at schools is paramount.
Keenan said this is a dangerous situation for all involved, as officers respond with the belief that there are subjects with real firearms on school grounds.
After officers explained the seriousness of these actions, the juveniles were extremely regretful, Keenan said.
Keenan urged the community to talk to their children about the consequences that can come along with carrying realistic looking firearms whether it is a BB Gun, Orbeez Gun or something else.
The suspects’ names and charges will not be released because they are juveniles.
