VERNON — Two men were arrested June 13 after a traffic stop on Route 83 led to the discovery of marijuana, fentanyl pills and two loaded firearms, police said.

Officer Zawadski stopped a vehicle around 10:15 p.m. for erratic operation and observed marijuana residue on the driver’s lap, according to the Vernon Police Department.

The officer administered field sobriety tests to the driver outside the vehicle while the passenger began experiencing a medical emergency and was also removed from the car.

While officers attended to the passenger, the driver ran back to the vehicle and jumped through the passenger compartment into the driver’s seat in an attempt to flee, police said.

Officers Zawadski and Wallace intervened and physically removed the driver before he could drive away.

K9 Franco was deployed and alerted on the vehicle, leading to a search that yielded 18 ounces of marijuana packaged for sale, 10 pressed fentanyl pills, scales and packaging material, and two loaded firearms, one with a switch assist and high capacity magazine.

Nahzai Watkins, 22, of Vernon, and Masai Johnson, 22, of Windsor, were arrested on numerous drug and firearms charges.

Both are scheduled to appear at GA #19.
