SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police arrested a 17-year-old suspect early Monday morning in connection with a Sunday night shooting that left one man seriously injured.
Officers responded to the area of Cedar Street and Lebanon Street around 8 p.m. Sunday after a ShotSpotter activation detected gunfire.
Police found evidence at the scene and learned an adult male gunshot victim had been privately transported to Mercy Medical Center.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was later transferred to Baystate Medical Center.
Members of the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center provided officers with a photo of a suspect.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday, officers were clearing vehicles from Riverfront Park after closing hours when they spotted someone matching the suspect’s description in the parking lot.
The individual ran when officers approached to identify him.
Police detained the suspect on the 0-100 block of State Street after a foot pursuit.
During the chase, officers saw the suspect discard an item, which was later recovered.
The discarded item was a plastic bag containing loose ammunition.
The Springfield Police Detective Bureau under Captain Trent Duda’s direction continued the investigation and charged the juvenile Monday morning in connection with the shooting.
Due to his age, the suspect’s name, booking photo and specific charges will not be released.
