NEWFIELD — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal fire that occurred early Sunday morning at a residence at 52 Maintenance Lane.
The Newfield Fire Department responded to the fire which destroyed a two-story home.
Fire Marshal investigators suspect that the homeowner, 39-year-old Kristofer Whittemore, may have been inside the residence at the time of the fire.
A search of the debris led to the discovery of human remains, which have been transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for positive identification.
The home is considered a total loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
