KENNEBUNKPORT — The Kennebunkport Police Department is warning residents and businesses about counterfeit $100 bills currently circulating in the area.
The fraudulent bills are believed to have been created by using genuine $10 bills and reprinting them to appear as $100 denominations, police said Friday.
All counterfeit bills identified so far share the same serial number: HF428830830.
Counterfeit detection pens may indicate these bills as genuine since the base paper is real U.S. currency, according to police.
The holographic security thread reads “USA TEN” instead of “USA 100.”
The watermark displays Alexander Hamilton, who appears on the $10 bill, instead of Benjamin Franklin.
Police are encouraging all businesses to remain vigilant and thoroughly inspect all $100 bills received, particularly when accepting cash payments.
Anyone who encounters suspicious bills or transactions should report them to the Kennebunkport Police Department immediately.
