SHREWSBURY — A 22-year-old Athol man was arrested early Thursday morning after police caught him breaking into a nutrition store on Boston Turnpike.

Officer Ljunggren was on patrol near St. Anne’s Church at approximately 3:18 a.m. June 12 when she noticed the front glass door of Undisputed Nutrition at 149 Boston Turnpike had been smashed.

When the officer responded to investigate, she observed a male’s head pop up from behind the counter inside the store.

Officer Ljunggren drew her firearm and ordered the man to show his hands, at which time she observed cash in his possession.

The suspect became noncompliant and did not listen to commands, according to police.

Officers Salman, Samuel, Piselli and Lieutenant Cameron arrived shortly after and the man was placed into custody following a brief struggle.

Police discovered the suspect was attempting to steal other items in addition to cash.

Bryce Shufelt was charged with breaking and entering nighttime for felony, larceny from a building and defacing property.
