SPRINGFIELD — A 42-year-old man wanted in connection with an armed robbery was arrested Thursday morning after crashing into two police cruisers while attempting to flee officers.

Springfield police received information Thursday that a suspect involved in a May 31 firearm-armed robbery on the 1400 block of Main Street was in a vehicle in the downtown area.

Officers located the suspect vehicle near Main Street and Chestnut Street around 9 a.m.

The driver refused to stop when officers attempted to pull over the vehicle.

Officers eventually stopped the vehicle on Interstate 291.

The driver attempted to flee the scene and crashed into two Springfield police cruisers.

Officers then detained both the driver and a passenger.

The driver was placed under arrest and the passenger was released.

One officer inside a rammed cruiser was taken to Baystate Medical Center to evaluate his injuries and has since been discharged.

The driver was also taken to the hospital and has not yet been booked.

Police said the driver’s name and charges will not be released until he is booked or arraigned.
