HOLYOKE — A 39-year-old Holyoke man was arrested Sunday after his ATV crashed into a parked police cruiser while fleeing from officers.

Carlos Alvarez was charged with multiple violations following the 6:15 p.m. incident on June 8, according to Holyoke Police Chief Brian Keenan.

Officer Nigel Astwood initially responded to Vernon Street for reports of illegal and dangerous operation of off-highway vehicles, including riders without helmets and juveniles being involved.

Responding officers encountered a moped and three ATVs.

Alvarez initially stopped when approached by police but rapidly accelerated and attempted to flee after Astwood exited his cruiser.

Officer Gabriel Perez spotted the fleeing ATV on Main Street, but Alvarez headed back toward the Vernon Street area at a high rate of speed.

Astwood had positioned his cruiser with emergency lights activated near the intersection of Main Street and Vernon Street when Alvarez crashed into the parked vehicle.

Alvarez was ejected from his ATV and sustained minor injuries.

He was treated at the scene before being placed under arrest.

The ATV was seized by police.

Alvarez faces charges including snow/recreational vehicle helmet violation, snow/recreational vehicle public way violation, failure to stop for police, snow/recreational vehicle negligent/reckless operation, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and speeding in violation of special regulations.
