Chelsea man arrested after attempted arson, found hiding in recycling barrel

CHELSEA — Chelsea Police officers arrested an adult male suspect June 6 following a brief foot pursuit that ended behind 151 Shawmut Street at approximately 8 p.m.

The individual was located by a Massachusetts State Police K9 unit while attempting to conceal himself inside a recycling barrel.

The arrest stems from an attempted arson incident at 156 Shawmut Street.

According to the victim, the suspect had been engaged in an ongoing dispute with a neighbor and allegedly ignited a mattress and placed it against the exterior of the residence.

The victim was able to remove the burning mattress before the fire could spread, preventing structural damage to the building.

No injuries to officers or civilians were reported.

The Chelsea Police Department is actively assisting the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Chelsea Fire Department in the ongoing investigation.

The suspect has refused to identify himself and is being held without bail by order of a Chelsea District Court Clerk.
