WATERTOWN — A 48-year-old man was arrested Thursday after leading deputies on a vehicle and foot chase that ended when he crashed into trees and fled on foot.
Anthony P. Belden of Watertown was apprehended following the pursuit that began around 11 a.m. when Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were notified by the probation department that Belden had an active probation violation warrant.
Deputies found Belden in a parked 2019 Nissan Sentra at a business on State Street.
When a deputy attempted to arrest him, Belden fled in the vehicle.
Minutes later, the deputy located the vehicle in a driveway on North Indiana Avenue and approached on foot.
Belden backed out of the driveway and fled again, nearly striking the deputy and his patrol vehicle.
Two additional deputies pursued Belden, who failed to stop for several blocks.
While attempting to turn from Bronson Street onto North Hamilton Street, Belden lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and crashed into trees.
He then ran from the vehicle and led deputies on a foot pursuit through residential backyards before being detained a short distance from the wrecked vehicle.
Two other occupants of the vehicle were detained and later released without charges.
In addition to the probation warrant, Belden faces charges of two counts of resisting arrest, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, and 15 tickets including reckless driving, failure to comply, speeding and other moving violations.
Belden was held at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility pending appearance in Jefferson County Court.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Jefferson County Probation Department and Watertown Police Department.
