NEWTON — A 67-year-old man was sentenced to 20 to 60 years at the New Hampshire State Prison after pleading guilty to four counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault.

John Bird entered his guilty plea on May 27 and was sentenced by Judge Lisa English, according to a joint statement released Thursday by Rockingham County Attorney Patricia Conway and the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Bird was convicted of sexually assaulting two young children over the course of many years.

In February 2024, one of the victims reported Bird’s long-term assaults to a trusted adult.

Another survivor also came forward at that time, and together they reported the assaults to local law enforcement.

The investigation involved the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children and the Rockingham County Attorney’s Office.

Deputy McKayla Fowler led the investigation.

Deputy County Attorney Kristin Vartanian and Lead Assistant County Attorney Roger “Rusty” Chadwick prosecuted the case.

Bird’s sentence also includes sex offender treatment.
