BOSTON — A 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday night after police found him carrying a loaded handgun and marijuana, authorities said.
Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force arrested the juvenile at about 8:50 p.m. during a firearm investigation in the area of 25 Georgetowne Drive.
Officers had set up surveillance around the development after receiving information that a juvenile suspect was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
Six teenagers were observed playing basketball at the Ohrenberger School before the group began to leave the area and walk back toward Georgetowne Drive.
Officers spoke with two individuals and observed their target walking on the other side of the street carrying a backpack.
The suspect noticed the officers and began walking at a quickened pace.
Officers stopped the suspect before he could enter an apartment building.
As officers attempted to conduct a pat frisk, the juvenile pushed one of the officers, dropped his backpack and tried to flee.
A brief foot chase occurred before officers apprehended the suspect.
A search of the backpack revealed a Glock 43X with one round in the chamber and six rounds in the magazine.
Officers also recovered 12 individually packaged bags of marijuana.
The 16-year-old is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and resisting arrest.
