BOSTON — Officers assigned to District A-1 arrested David McGrath, 51, of Chelsea, for assault with a dangerous weapon Wednesday.
At about 5:37 p.m., officers were on patrol in the area of Summer Street near Arch Street when they observed a Macy’s Asset Protection Employee following a shoplifter.
The officers quickly exited their cruiser and were advised that the suspect had stolen merchandise and was armed with a knife.
A foot pursuit ensued, and a knife was observed in the suspect’s right hand.
Officers gave multiple de-escalation commands for the suspect to drop the knife which he ignored.
As officers got closer to the suspect, he attempted to place the knife in his left hand.
At that time, officers were able to stop the suspect and a struggle ensued.
During the struggle, the knife was pointed towards officers, and they were able to disarm him.
The suspect was brought to the ground, and he continued to actively resist.
Officers were able to safely handcuff the suspect, and recovered the knife.
McGrath was placed under arrest and is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court for two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, larceny under $1,200, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.
