Rutland inmate charged with assaulting correctional officer

RUTLAND — A 25-year-old Fairhaven man has been charged with assaulting a correctional officer at Marble Valley Correctional Center on June 2.

Justin Zayas-Sanchez was cited for assaulting a protected professional after allegedly striking correctional officer Zachery Currier, 33, of Hampton, New York, in the face with a closed fist.

The incident occurred at 5:30 a.m. shortly after Zayas-Sanchez was booked into the facility.

Zayas-Sanchez had been brought to the correctional center by Rutland City Police Department on an active arrest warrant.

Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Troop B-West investigated the incident.

Zayas-Sanchez was issued a citation on June 3 by troopers from Vermont State Police St. Johnsbury following his transfer from Marble Valley Correctional Center to Northeastern Correctional Center.
