ROYALSTON — Police are warning residents about a utility payment scam after a man impersonating a National Grid employee attempted to collect money from a homeowner Tuesday.

The incident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. when an individual approached a residence and told the homeowner their electric bill was overdue.

The suspect claimed he was there to turn off the power unless an immediate payment could be made.

The homeowner did not pay the individual and he left the area.

Police described the imposter as a white male wearing a yellow traffic-type vest and a hard hat.

No vehicle was observed in the driveway and the subject walked to the street out of sight.

Royalton Police completed a check of the area but made no contact with a subject fitting the description.

Police emphasized that National Grid will not send anyone to residences to collect payments.

Authorities are asking residents who experience similar incidents or feel someone is at their residence for suspicious reasons to call 911 immediately and attempt to provide a description of the individual and any vehicle.
