MOUNT MORRIS — Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of two Nunda residents on felony charges following an investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began after the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Livingston County Department of Social Services regarding possible welfare fraud.
Livingston County Sheriff’s Investigators conducted an inquiry into the allegations.
It is alleged that 34-year-old John Maynard and 32-year-old Brittany Maynard failed to accurately report the composition of their household and additional household income.
As a result, the two collected an overpayment of Temporary Assistance Benefits they were not entitled to from March through May of 2024.
On May 30, Sheriff’s Investigator James Merrick arrested and charged both individuals with one count of felony Welfare Fraud in the Third Degree and one count of felony Grand Larceny in the Third Degree.
Both individuals were transported to the Livingston County Jail, where they were turned over to Central Booking Deputies for processing and pre-arraignment detention.
Both individuals were later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part at the Livingston County Jail before Town of North Dansville Justice Werth.
The judge released the two on their own recognizance, as the offenses do not qualify for bail under the New York State Bail Reform Act.
The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office represented both individuals at the court arraignment.
The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office was present to represent the People.
Assisting with the investigation were the Livingston County Department of Social Services, the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office, and the Sheriff’s Patrol Division.
