HOLYOKE — Holyoke Police will seek criminal charges against a driver whose vehicle crashed into and heavily damaged several monuments at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza early Sunday morning.

Police Chief Brian Keenan said officers responded to a single-car crash at the plaza, located at Suffolk and Sycamore Streets, around 4:25 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived, they found the driver, a 26-year-old Springfield man, and a passenger still inside the vehicle.

Officers gained access to the vehicle before firefighters arrived to extract the driver.

Both the driver and passenger were administered Narcan at the scene and transported to the hospital to evaluate possible injuries.

The driver was cited, and officers will be seeking a criminal complaint for operating under the influence of drugs and wanton destruction of property over $1,200.

The Holyoke Department of Public Works has been contacted about the damage to the memorial.
