WEST ELMIRA — The West Elmira Police Department announced Friday that Sonjia Shay, an 87-year-old resident reported missing earlier this week, has been found in safe condition.

Police thanked Chemung County Sheriff William Schrom, the Chemung County Sheriff’s deputies and their Criminal Investigation Division for their assistance in locating Shay.

The West Elmira Fire Department also assisted in the search efforts, according to police.

Authorities expressed gratitude to the local press and to the public, whose tips and leads contributed to Shay’s recovery.

Shay was reported missing on the evening of May 29 and had last been seen on May 28 around 2:00 p.m., after telling friends she was feeling unwell.

Investigators believe Shay left her residence on foot on the afternoon of May 28.

The last known location of Shay’s cell phone was in the area of Broadway Street and Bulkhead Street in Southport on May 28 around 5:00 p.m.

Authorities had said there was concern Shay may have been suffering from a medical emergency.

Police have not released additional details about her disappearance but say the matter is now resolved.
