New Paltz traffic stop leads to cocaine seizure; two arrested, arraigned without bail

NEW PALTZ — Two people were arrested Wednesday evening following a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in the town of New Paltz, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers with the Troop F Community Stabilization Unit conducted the stop at around 6:08 p.m. May 28 on a northbound 2013 Volvo for multiple violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.

The driver was identified as Jorge L. Leyva, 36, of the Bronx, and the front seat passenger as Alexandra M. Rocheleau, 35, of Richmond.

During the investigation, police searched Rocheleau and seized more than 260 grams of cocaine.

A bag containing cocaine residue was also found inside the vehicle.

Leyva and Rocheleau were taken into custody and transported to SP Highland for processing without incident.

Leyva was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A-I felony.

He was also charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, a Class B felony.

Leyva faces two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both Class A misdemeanors, as well as aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree, an unclassified misdemeanor, and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

Rocheleau was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class A-I felony.

She was also charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, a Class B felony, and facilitating aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, an infraction.

Both individuals were arraigned in New Paltz Town Court on May 29 and remanded to Ulster County Jail without bail.

They are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
