NEW BEDFORD — A routine traffic stop early Thursday resulted in the seizure of an illegal firearm and an arrest.
At around 2 a.m. on May 29, Officers Emily Pacheco and William Mouyos observed a speeding vehicle run a red light at the intersection of County and Union streets.
The officers stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Gennys Silverio, 23, of 146 Apple Tree Lane.
As officers spoke with Silverio, he shifted his vehicle into drive and attempted to flee.
After a brief pursuit, Silverio crashed into a brick wall on Kempton Street and tried to escape on foot before being apprehended.
A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded .38 caliber revolver.
Silverio does not possess a license to carry a firearm.
He was arrested and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, failing to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and leaving the scene of property damage.
