EAST HAVEN — East Haven police arrested a driver following a serious one-car crash on Bradley Street that left a passenger critically injured Monday afternoon.
At approximately 3:08 p.m. on May 26, the East Haven Public Safety Communications Center received reports of a motor vehicle accident in the area of 400 Bradley Street involving a passenger ejected from a moving car.
Responding officers located a male lying in the roadway while East Haven Fire Department personnel administered life-saving measures.
A black 2013 Cadillac CTS with visible front-end damage and a flat tire was found stopped nearby.
Police identified the driver as Alexander Duarte, 21, of Brewery Square, New Haven.
Officers said Duarte was exhibiting signs of impairment and later failed a series of field sobriety tests before being taken into custody.
The South-Central Connecticut Traffic Unit responded due to the severity of the passenger’s injuries and assisted with the accident reconstruction investigation.
Initial findings indicated the passenger had been partially seated outside the vehicle window before being ejected as Duarte traveled northwest on Bradley Street.
According to police, Duarte reported losing control of his vehicle, striking a curb and blowing a tire shortly before the passenger was ejected.
The ejected passenger was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital with serious injuries and was last listed in stable but critical condition.
Duarte was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and failure to drive in the proper lane.
He was held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New Haven Superior Court (GA 23) on June 4.
The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.
Police ask residents in the Bradley Street area to review camera footage for any relevant video to aid in the investigation.
Additional charges may be forthcoming pending the results of the accident reconstruction.
