Gunshot reports in St. Albans traced to vehicle exhaust, police say

ST. ALBANS — Reports of gunfire near Bay Park on Tuesday turned out to be the sound of a vehicle’s modified exhaust system, according to local police.

The St. Albans Police Department responded to multiple calls about possible gunshots in the area of Bay Park on May 27 around Maquam Shore Road.

Callers reported seeing two vehicles exchanging what they believed to be gunfire while driving through the area.

Officers conducted a thorough investigation, including deploying a gunpowder residue detection K9 and reviewing surveillance footage, but found no evidence of actual gunfire.

Police later identified and located one of the vehicles involved, determining that the driver had been “two-stepping” the vehicle — a practice that causes the exhaust system to produce loud, explosive sounds that can be mistaken for gunshots.

Authorities are still attempting to locate the second vehicle involved in the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police indicated that citations or charges may be issued as appropriate.
