BOSTON — A 33-year-old Dorchester man faces multiple charges after a traffic stop in Mattapan led to a violent struggle during which a firearm discharged, according to Boston police.

The incident occurred around 12:19 p.m. Sunday, May 25, when an officer from District B-3 conducted a traffic stop near Westmore Road and Gilmer Street.

As the officer attempted to detain the suspect, identified as Richard Raymond, a struggle ensued during which the suspect’s firearm discharged, police said.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was struck by the gunfire.

Additional officers responded to an “officer in trouble” call and helped take Raymond into custody.

Police recovered a Canik TP9SFx firearm with fourteen rounds in the magazine and a spent shell casing lodged in the weapon.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a live round and marijuana in the suspect’s jacket pocket, along with approximately 14 grams of Fentanyl, fifteen non-prescribed pills, and about $1,888 in U.S. currency, according to authorities.

Both the officer and Raymond were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Raymond faces multiple charges including unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm, ammunition possession without an FID card, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, assault and battery on a police officer, and drug trafficking.

Police said Raymond also had four active warrants for previous firearm, drug, and motor vehicle offenses.

The suspect’s vehicle was towed pending a search warrant, and Raymond is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
