Oxford resident avoids jury duty phone scam

1 min read

OXFORD — A local resident successfully avoided becoming a victim of a jury duty phone scam after receiving suspicious calls from someone falsely claiming to be with the State Police, authorities reported Saturday.

The Oxford Police Department said the resident received a call from a restricted number on May 24, with the caller claiming she had missed jury duty and was being issued a subpoena.

When the resident expressed skepticism about the call’s legitimacy, the scammer hung up and called back, this time using technology to “spoof” the Oxford Resident Trooper’s Office phone number to make the call appear official.

The resident did not engage with the caller and instead went directly to the Oxford Police Department to verify the situation, according to police.

No personal information or payment was provided to the scammer.

Law enforcement officials remind residents that police will never call to demand payment or personal information for jury duty.

Authorities advise anyone receiving suspicious calls to hang up immediately, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and report the incident to local police.
