STAMFORD — A man driving a stolen vehicle led police on a chase through city streets before being arrested on the roof of a technical school Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Officers from the Stamford Police Department’s Traffic Unit spotted a black Mercedes SUV driving the wrong way on Sixth Street onto Bedford Street around 10 a.m. on May 21.
When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading to a vehicle pursuit through city streets that eventually turned into a foot chase through Scalzi Park.
The suspect, identified as Carl Dawkins, ran across Washington Boulevard, through a river, and into the fenced area of Wright Technical School where he climbed onto the roof.
Both Wright Tech and nearby Cloonan Middle School were placed on lockdown as a safety precaution during the incident.
Officers from all districts responded to the scene, and with assistance from Connecticut State Police, established a perimeter around the area.
Dawkins, who is currently on parole, was taken into custody on the roof of the school.
Police determined the Mercedes SUV had been reported stolen from Southfield Avenue and recovered property inside the vehicle believed to be from additional thefts.
Dawkins faces multiple charges including motor vehicle theft, interfering with police, first-degree criminal trespass, engaging in pursuit, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
Bond was set at $100,000 plus a parole remand.
