CORTLAND — The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert Monday warning residents about a scam circulating in the community.

Sheriff Mark E. Helms said scammers are contacting individuals with false allegations and demanding payment to “clear up” the claims.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents to never share personal information with unknown individuals online or over the phone.

Authorities advised that anyone receiving unexpected calls, computer alerts, or social media messages attempting to collect money should report the incident to the Cortland County 911 Center at (607) 753-3311.

Helms emphasized that residents should never meet with unknown individuals who contact them through these methods.
