WARE — Two suspects were arrested Wednesday in connection with a March arson that destroyed a shed and damaged a home in Springfield, authorities said.

Nelson Martins, 51, of Ludlow and Wendy Champagne, 47, of Ware were taken into custody by Massachusetts State Police on Canal Street in Ware at approximately 3 p.m.

The arrests stem from a March 1 incident when officers and firefighters responded to a home on the 0-100 block of Kamuda Street for a shed fire.

Springfield Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the shed and caused damage to the adjacent home.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

The Springfield Arson & Bomb Squad, which includes fire investigators and police detectives, determined the fire was intentionally set.

Investigators identified Martins and Champagne as suspects in the case.

According to their landlord, the pair was being evicted from the property for non-payment of rent at the time of the fire.

A detective obtained arrest warrants for both suspects on May 14.

Martins faces charges of arson in Springfield District Court and has outstanding default warrants from Dudley, Ayer, and Marlborough District Courts.

Champagne is charged with arson in Springfield District Court.
