ALBANY — New York State Police have arrested two individuals in separate incidents involving suspects who fled from traffic stops, with both cases resolved after extensive investigations.
The first incident occurred on Sept. 1, 2024, at approximately 10:18 p.m., when troopers attempted to stop a black BMW speeding on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 22.
The driver initially refused to stop, leading to a brief pursuit that ended when traffic forced the vehicle to halt.
As a trooper began exiting their marked patrol vehicle, the BMW accelerated and struck the driver’s side door of the police car.
The trooper sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was able to return to duty.
After an eight-month investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, authorities identified and arrested Oumar Janneh, 21, on May 17.
Janneh faces charges of second-degree assault, a class D felony, along with unlawful fleeing and reckless endangerment, both class A misdemeanors.
In an unrelated case on April 18 at approximately 1:16 a.m., troopers attempted to stop a gray Nissan traveling eastbound near exit 20N in the Town of Hempstead for having a fraudulent registration.
The Nissan initially stopped in the left lane before speeding away, prompting a short pursuit that was eventually terminated.
The vehicle was later found abandoned and locked.
Following another thorough investigation, police arrested Wilfredo Cabrera, 24, of Brooklyn on May 15.
Cabrera was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, reckless driving — all class A misdemeanors — and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.
Cabrera is scheduled to appear in court on June 4.
