BRUTUS — A man was arrested and charged with arson after setting his vehicle on fire during a welfare check in Cayuga County.
Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that deputies responded to check on Jason M. Berry at approximately 11:33 p.m. Tuesday near Hall and Pump Road in the Town of Brutus.
When deputies attempted to negotiate with Berry, he allegedly set the vehicle he had been operating on fire before surrendering to law enforcement without incident.
Berry was charged with third-degree arson, a class C felony.
Further investigation led to an additional charge of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class A misdemeanor, for illegally possessing a shotgun as a convicted felon.
Berry was remanded to the custody of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office without bail.
