WALTHAM — The Waltham Police Department has released new details about a motor vehicle crash involving a police cruiser at the intersection of Totten Pond Road and Wyman Street.
According to preliminary findings, a marked Waltham Police cruiser was traveling westbound on Totten Pond Road while responding to an unrelated call for service on May 21.
The officer reportedly came to a complete stop at a red traffic signal before proceeding into the intersection with emergency lights activated.
A civilian vehicle traveling southbound on Wyman Street entered the intersection with a green light at approximately 25 miles per hour.
The civilian driver stated she observed the police cruiser entering the intersection at the last moment and attempted to brake but was unable to avoid collision.
The impact struck the rear passenger side of the police vehicle, causing it to roll onto its side.
The officer reported he did not see the approaching vehicle prior to the collision.
Both drivers were transported to local hospitals as a precaution, though no serious injuries were reported at the scene.
The Waltham Police Crash Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the incident.
