Springfield police seize drugs, ammunition in traffic stop

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield police officers seized a large quantity of heroin, fentanyl, cocaine and ammunition during a traffic stop Friday, following an earlier assault investigation.

The incident began around 8 a.m. when officers responded to the 1100 block of St. James Avenue for a report of a suspect pointing a gun at a victim.

Officers identified the suspect as Kevin Martinez-Sanchez and located him around 10 a.m. on the 500 block of Page Boulevard, sitting in a vehicle.

Police conducted surveillance as Martinez-Sanchez and a second individual, identified as Edgardo Vargas, drove to a nearby gas station where officers approached them.

According to police, cocaine was visible inside the vehicle, leading to a search that uncovered approximately 5,090 bags of heroin, 28.2 grams of fentanyl, 810 vials of cocaine, 900 vials of crack-cocaine, and approximately 120 grams of crack-cocaine.

Officers also seized four firearm magazines and 128 rounds of ammunition during the 10:40 a.m. operation.

Martinez-Sanchez, 31, of Springfield, faces multiple charges including carrying a firearm without a license, assault with a dangerous weapon, drug trafficking, and motor vehicle violations.

Vargas, 55, of Springfield, was charged with drug trafficking, ammunition possession without an FID card, and conspiracy to violate drug law.
