SPRINGFIELD — A 16-year-old male was arrested early Monday after allegedly breaking into multiple vehicles and attempting to steal a Hyundai, according to Springfield police.

Officers responded to the 0-100 block of Melrose Street around 12:30 a.m. following reports of vehicle break-ins.

Two suspects were observed breaking into three Hyundai vehicles, with one suspect damaging the ignition of one car in an apparent theft attempt.

Police located one suspect who fled on Northampton Avenue before officers apprehended him on Wilbraham Avenue.

The teen was found in possession of items reported stolen from a car on Melrose Street and was taken into custody at approximately 1:45 a.m.

Due to the suspect’s age, police are not releasing his name, charges, or booking photo.

Springfield police continue to warn that Hyundai and Kia vehicles remain frequent targets for break-ins and thefts.

Authorities urge owners of these vehicles to obtain highly visible steering wheel locking devices to deter criminal activity.
