CORTLANDVILLE — New York State Police arrested a Spencer man after he fled from officers during a traffic stop on State Route 13 in Cortlandville early Sunday.
Troopers were conducting a traffic stop at approximately 12:31 a.m. May 18 when a vehicle stopped behind the patrol car.
When officers approached the vehicle, it sped away, and troopers lost sight of it before they could identify the license plate.
A Cortland County Sheriff’s Deputy later reported seeing a similar vehicle driving without headlights and performing burnouts on State Route 13, nearly striking the deputy.
As troopers headed toward the deputy’s location, they spotted the described vehicle traveling in the wrong lane on State Route 13 and activated their emergency lights.
The vehicle continued at high speed before eventually stopping near the Elm Tree Golf Course, where the driver exited and surrendered.
Police identified the driver as Devyn J. Barry, 30, of Spencer.
Barry was charged with reckless driving and unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, both misdemeanors, along with numerous traffic violations.
