YORK — York police officers arrested two murder suspects from Texas after spotting them walking on York Street at approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Avery E. Stemmons, 22, and Karina Gonzalez Barreto, 21, both of Killeen, Texas, were taken into custody without incident after officers recognized them from descriptions provided to law enforcement.

York Patrol Sergeant Bryan Cantara and Officer Crosby were responding to an unrelated call when they observed the pair walking west on York Street.

The suspects were wanted on warrants from Texas for murder, arson and abuse of a corpse.

A firearm believed to have been used in the Texas murder was recovered at the scene and collected as evidence.

U.S. Marshals and Wells Police Department assisted at the scene with securing the suspects and evidence.

Both suspects were initially transported to York Police Station for processing before being taken to York County Jail in Alfred as fugitives from justice.

York police had been alerted on May 19 that the murder suspects might be in the area, prompting a search by York police, Wells police and U.S. Marshals in both communities.
